Do you have to have a connection to have great sex with someone?

Frankly I have had one nighters and they weren't good at all every single time. I was excited to do it but there was no passion. Am I the only one that needs more of a connection to have great sex? Ive had the best sex ever but only with those Ive gotten know. I hear stories of great one nighters am I missing something?
